It is easy for parents to identify their child's physical needs: nutritious food, warm clothes when it's cold, bedtime at a reasonable hour. However, a child's mental and emotional needs may not be as obvious. The basics for a child's good mental health include: Unconditional love from a family, self-confidence and high self-esteem, the opportunity to play with other children, encouraging teachers and supportive caretakers, safe and secure surroundings, appropriate guidance and discipline.

This fact sheet covers the following topics:

  1. Signs of mental illness
  2. Schizophrenia in children
  3. Bipolar disorder in children
  4. Depression in children
  5. Anxiety disorders in children
  6. Further information.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please note that single copies of individual fact sheets are available free of charge to users of mental health services and their carers, but multiple copies are chargeable to organisations at the rates shown per copy.
