"The video is very powerful. I think that all health and social care professionals would benefit from seeing the video."
Philip Hurst, Age Concern
Whilst the loss of mental capabilities is not an essential part of ageing, a significant minority of older people have an identifiable mental health problem. Very often this is due to isolation, loneliness, loss or changes in lifestyle.
The Valuing Experience training pack has been developed to raise awareness of the needs of older people who are experiencing mental ill health and to highlight models of good practice in care.
The Valuing Experience video features older people with a range of experiences – from depression to dementia as well as long term mental health needs – speaking powerfully about the isolation, difficulties and discrimination they’ve faced as a result of their illness. They also talk about the help and support they need to live well. The accompanying workbook contains training sessions that link these personal testimonies to best practice in working with older people.
Valuing Experience also highlights the importance of user involvement and empowerment in service development and is aimed at everyone who works with older people with mental health needs.
This product includes a video and 20 page booklet.
