Good support and understanding is one of the most important factors promoting recovery, avoiding hospital admissions and maintaining good health for people with mental health difficulties.
Friends and Family is a resource that provides practical advice and information about mental distress. The video involves people in four different relationships talking through their strategies for surviving serious mental health problems. People with mental health problems and those who support them – parents, partners or flat-mates – talk about what they have found difficult, as well as how they have made their relationship work.
None would claim to have got it all right – but they do have useful advice on how to keep communication going, strike a balance between concern and independence, work with professionals, and access the support available for carers.
